Drawing us in with a delicate count to three and an acoustic guitar performance, M3G opens De-Anchored with raw authenticity and vulnerable, self-reflective lyrics as she sings, “I am not myself right now, I worry I’ve forgotten how, and it’s so cold…”
M3G continues with a high emotional quotient, “The world is burning out my empathy, and I am out of energy, it has changed me…”. The delivery feels extremely real, and relatable. There is a cinematic allure to the track and a zeitgeist attached to the sentiment.
In essence, De-Anchored expresses a deep sense of emotional exhaustion, alienation and self-destruction. M3G feels disconnected, overwhelmed by a harsh world, and uses clever nautical imagery – a self-built sinking ship, drifting without an anchor, stormy seas, and crashing rocks – to paint a vivid picture of this depression, anxiety and burnout.
M3G confesses, “De-Anchored is inspired by the ocean and it’s about losing one’s sense of self and discovering they are not the person they thought they were. Being lost at sea, like a ship who has lost the anchor of their sense of self.”
We could imagine the track being featured in a TV show like Euphoria, during a poignant self-reflective scene with Jules, or perhaps a movie such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In a very self-referential move, the track would also work for the literal shark movie franchise, The Meg. We appreciate the layered harmonies, the cracks in M3G‘s voice, and the warbling vocal design which feels like being underwater.
This, along with the concepts of salt water tears and waves symbolize M3G‘s despair really evocatively. The build of the track is sublime and truly has us on the verge of tears. M3G cites Florence and the Machine as a sonic influence, which we can feel manifest. Fans of Billie Eilish would also be able to connect with what M3G is creating.
