We previously featured Leaone when he explored mortality, memory and meaning on the existential and cosmic single, Goodbyes & Goodtimes, so when we heard that the rising artist was back with My Lover Threw Me Under A Bus, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
My Lover Threw Me Under A Bus opens with a vintage orchestral strings arrangement, rippling piano keys and whimsical tones as Leaone shares the opening lyrics, “I’ve been out of my mind for a long time, been through heaven and hell…”
The opus expands with a captivating hook and an empowering message of rising up despite the actions of Leaone‘s love. We are obsessed with his animated delivery, the emotional switch-ups and theatrical edge that manifests.
Speaking on the release, Leaone confesses, “This is probably my favourite song on the album, definitely top 3, and the quickest to write and make by miles and miles.” The middle eight with syncopated drums and keys is sublime, and reinforces his poetic prowess and emotive energy.
We learn that My Lover Threw Me Under A Bus is the second single from Leaone’s forthcoming album Goodbyes & Goodtimes. The entire record was written and self-produced in a Suffolk caravan during a year of isolation.

The nostalgia that comes to life with the strings, originally produced in 1984, and the closing curtain call at the end of the song will allow fans of timeless artists like Elvis Presley and David Bowie to connect with the track, and Leaone also mentions the swagger of Action Bronson as a sonic influence. Leaone‘s art has also drawn comparisons to Richard Hawley, Matt Berninger, and Nick Cave.
There is a cinematic allure that comes to life, which would fit well in the current season of Euphoria on HBO (especially in a scene with Nate), or a film like the Oscar-winning One Battle After Another, which really aligns directly with the lyrics and themes of resilience from the song.
We continue to be in awe of what Leaone is creating, and have added My Lover Threw Me Under A Bus to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Leaone, and anticipate the release of his album!
