One of our favourite rising bands, Chandra, have taken one of the most emotionally charged songs in sporting history and breathed new life into it. Their version of Nessun Dorma (We’ll Win Again!) is a newly invigorated spiritual anthem for football supporters in time for the upcoming World Cup!
It is a song about heartbreak, hope and human connection. Short. Powerful. Cinematic. The song was originally written by Giacomo Puccini for the opera Turandot. Nessun Dorma became immortal beyond the opera world when Luciano Pavarotti performed it during the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. Since then, the aria has carried the emotional weight of major tournaments.
It is clear that Chandra understand that history and have decided to honour it, but also modernise it with a bold, stadium-ready rock energy, reminiscent of the band’s signature sound, whilst remaining true to the original. The song’s central message is simple. Never stop believing. Even after defeat.
Speaking on the release, Chandra says, “This one is something REALLY different and probably our most crazy and ambitious musical project ever. It all started in January… I heard something in the Winter Olympics closing ceremony and in that moment I immediately heard our band’s version of it. It sparked this crazy idea. At the time Chris was in hospital having a major operation so I couldn’t tell him about it. But I messaged Mike and two days later he had written a sublime guitar intro. The rest, as they say, is history. I guess technically this is a cover, but really I think we have completely re-imagined the song… the feeling of empowerment it gives, the lyrics, the journey it takes you on.”
The three-act structure of the music video makes the emotional journey even stronger. ACT I, We Don’t Dare Sleep, which captures the nervous anticipation before battle. ACT II, Once Again It’s Over, serves as the emotional collapse after defeat. Then comes ACT III, We’ll Win Again – the emotional payoff.
Visually, the Gloucestershire landscapes give the video a timeless quality. Open skies. Golden light. Rolling hills. It feels grounded and spiritual at once. The closing spoken message about sport overcoming division adds real emotional depth. It transforms the song into something larger than football.
Chandra have transformed an operatic masterpiece into a modern football hymn. Passionate. Hopeful. Unifying. Exactly what a World Cup anthem should be. We can imagine the track securing a Sky Sports advertisement sync placement and being performed in a massive stadium.
We have added Nessun Dorma (We’ll Win Again!) to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Chandra, including Boom, and Heaven On Earth.
