Setting the tone with a dimensional and intricate guitar soundscape featuring textured drums and astral melodies, The Nine Wives open L.A. with vibrancy and optimism. The Dutch band shares intertwined vocals as they convey situational and philosophical prose with escapist notions.
The Nine Wives take us on a trip to Los Angeles, tapping into a liberated energy. The power pop transition with a high emotional quotient is sublime. We love the layered harmonies and the playful, yet cinematically visual nature of what the band is creating.
The guitar performances are transcendental and help paint a sun-soaked visual of Los Angeles. The concept of the American Dream resonates far and wide, especially in Europe, so we can totally relate to the idea of escaping and hedonism associated with it.
The final moments of the song unveil a twist that this is indeed a solo trip. This makes sense after the preceding vocals. Speaking on the release, The Nine Wives confess, “L.A. is a garage-leaning breakup track: raw, direct, and built around a tight power trio sound. It sits somewhere between indie rock and lo-fi garage energy – minimal, melodic, and emotionally blunt.”

We learn that The Nine Wives is a trio formed by Eindhoven-based musician Woody Veneman. He is joined by drummer Lola Heijdt and bassist/vocalist Joni Houtman. Today also marks the launch of their self-titled album, which celebrates Veneman’s 20-year musical career.
It was recorded at Tarwesound Studio under producer Pieter Kloos, the album revisits songs from Veneman’s earlier projects alongside new material. The album launch will take place next weekend on May 30 at Café Wilhelmina during the BRIDGE Guitar Festival Eindhoven!
Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added L.A. to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the entirety of their album, and await future releases.
