Drawing us in with an ethereal synthscape featuring a meditative frequency, glistening astral tones, cerebral melodic details and atmospheric vocals, DonnyJ opens A Villain with a sublime energy. The opus expands with conceptual prose – assertive, and self-realized.
The rising artist shares his lived experience and the captivating hook, “I could be, greatest in history, for this world, I’d be a villain…”. The philosophical depth is electric, and the high emotional quotient that DonnyJ performs with is hypnotic.
In essence, the message of the track paints DonnyJ as someone with immense ambition and self-belief. Like many of us, he feels alienated from a world that rewards conformity, image, and superficial success. This feels highly zeitgeist and relatable.
The refrain shows us that achieving true greatness may require qualities that society judges harshly, even if those same attributes drive excellence. Beneath his confidence, there’s an undercurrent of frustration and isolation from searching for identity and meaning in a fake and performative cultural landscape.

As for the soundscape, it’s giving the lovechild of Michael Jackson and Grimes. Fans of The Weeknd would also be able to connect with A Villain, especially DonnyJ’s timbre and the design of the vocals with luscious echoes, harmonies and pitched moments. We could also imagine this in a scene of Euphoria on HBO, or Beauty in Black on Netflix. Speaking on the release, Donny J simply says, “The music shall speak for itself. Nothing to sell beyond that.”
We learn that DonnyJ comes from Tampa, Florida. He wrote, co-produced and performs A Villain, as well as engineering the track and creating the artwork. The artwork is a statement in itself, a literal blurry selfie that cements his message that the music must speak for itself, which is truly does.
Our minds are blown, and we have added A Villain to our New Music Spotlight playlist, as well as our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we continue to stream DonnyJ‘s wider discography, including Hot Pursuit, Sex Me Up, and Staying.
