Drawing us in with a dimensional and cerebral alternative pop soundscape, intricate in its design and progressive in its execution, LeFrike opens Forsake All Money with intrigue. The track expands with guitar twangs and trippy electronica notions before experience the pitch down ad-lib from Simone Mary featuring the mantra, “Move that bass, forsake all money…”
Needless to say, we are enthralled by the track thus far, and impressed with the accompanying music video which sees performer Laura Bardots in an expressive dance studio like a lost beauty queen, wearing a sash that says “submissive”. Laura dances in a way that mirrors the concept of the track. Although subtle and metaphorical, the commentary on society is clear.
Speaking on the release, LeFrike confesses, “It is a dedication to female rage. The built up emotions within women that are desperate to come out. To forsake all money is to give up power and control and this song is a rallying cry to the world that men release the power and allow women their time on top.” The video also reflects this as Laura removes her wig and smudges her make-up.
The production itself is incredible. It is hypnotic, trippy electronica with detailed motifs that keep us captivated. Fans of Cedric Gervais would be able to connect with Forsake All Money, and LeFrike cites Tame Impala as a sonic inspiration, which we can definitely feel manifest, although there is no doubt that the Limerick, Ireland-based producer is creating a universe unto their own design.
It’s interesting that LeFrike says, “It sounds like the end credits to an indie thriller…”, which we can also appreciate. Forsake All Money would also be a great fit for a sync deal in a show like Euphoria on HBO, or a more psychedelic TV show like Nine Perfect Strangers.
Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added Forsake All Money to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we anticipate future releases from LeFrike!
