Drawing us in with an intricate piano performance, a luscious and orchestral strings arrangement with layered operatic vocalizations, Mourning Dove opens Abbandonato with a high emotional quotient and a brooding, theatrical timbre.
The build of the track is sublime and dramatic, in line with the concept of the song. In essence, Abbandonato is a deeply emotional song about the painful feeling of spiritual abandonment. This is the notion of being disconnected from faith, hope and God during difficult and uncertain times.
Mourning Dove confesses, “The creation of this music started from the current situation in the world, which has led to a lot of people feeling abandoned by their God.” We appreciate the zeitgeist and contemporary nature of the message. It feels highly relatable, and in a time where opera is truly not celebrated enough, we are grateful to Mourning Dove for bringing this art form to the present moment.
The lyrics reflect a universal struggle, and Mourning Dove cites Verdi, Dimash Kudaibergen, and Andrea Bocelli, as sonic influences to bring Abbandonato to life with technical brilliance. The rising artist from Darfo Boario Terme in Italy says, “This release stands out with the emotion I put behind it and my vocal improvement since the previous releases, my vocal range has increased vastly.”
He adds, “I managed to learn countertenor operatic technique (heavily inspired by that you hear in a Vivaldi composition for male parts above the tenor range, just to sing parts of this song.”

The fact that Abbandonato was produced in Mourning Dove‘s bedroom, goes to show how incredible technology is today, and how empowering and cathartic music like this can be created by an individual with dedicated passion and skill. Mourning Dove describes himself as “a crossover opera artist dedicated to bringing the raw emotion of the classical world into the contemporary landscape by stripping away the formal barriers of the opera house.”
We love Abbandonato and have added the track to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Mourning Dove‘s growing discography, including Requiem, and his album, Angelo della Luce.
