Setting the tone with a vibrant and ethereal staccato synth featuring a pulsating kick, Ekelle opens (Turn Me) Loose with a self-realized ad-lib of “I’m the prize” and the lyrics, “I don’t need your problems, sick of watching re-runs, sway until the day comes, last time lover…”
We immediately connect with the narrative that is unfolding and Ekelle‘s bid for freedom from a stale relationship. The rising artist tells us, “Turn Me (Loose) is a post-breakup anthem rooted in freedom, self-trust, and reclaiming joy through community. It captures that moment when heartbreak shifts into clarity – and you realize you were always the prize.”
The timbre and delivery switch-ups keep us enthralled throughout as Ekelle shows us her versatility as a vocalist and rapper. It’s empowering, intelligently written and something that fans of Lizzo and Megan Thee Stallion would absolutely be able to connect with.
The vocal design is great too, with cerebral echoes and ad-libs detailing the track throughout. (Turn Me) Loose also comes with a music video which sees Ekelle performing in her element from the bedroom to the beach.
We learn that the track was produced with Audio Gibbs and serves as an extension of Ekelle‘s “hood-pop” repertoire. The track also has a cinematic appeal and we could imagine it manifesting a sync placement in a scene from Beauty in Black, or Euphoria that represents the narrative of the song.
Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added (Turn Me) Loose to our New Music Spotlight playlist and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the growing discography of the Toronto-based star, including Look’d So Good, and Flo.
