We previously featured The Cadence of Rhyme for the experimental, emotional and defiant single, Dalek, so when we heard that the innovative project was back with Surprise Me, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Surprise Me opens with cerebral, shooting percussion textures and a playful, dimensional bass with the lyrics, “Surprise me, shock me, rock me, shake me, don’t break me…” We immediately connect with the high emotional quotient of the song and the charismatic delivery.
The track oozes authenticity, and we love the sublime synths and brooding harmony ad-libs. The composition evolves with a serene guitar performance, cementing the neo-soul and groove-based identity of the opus.
There is an undeniable cinematic allure to Surprise Me, making it perfect for a multitude of sync placements, notably a moody romantic movie that feels aligned with the lyrics of the song, perhaps something like Amazon’s recent hit films, F Valentine’s Day, and The Idea of You, or the psychological TV show The Girlfriend.

The chilled BPM combined with the subversive hook, “pepper me up” is genius. The Cadence of Rhyme comments, “‘Pepper me up’ was the hook I started with, referring to getting peppered with a shotgun.”
On his conscious connection with the universe, the songwriter and producer says, “I get flashes of ideas which I transform into lyrics. I wrote a different song about that called The Source. I believe the inspirational ideas are sometimes sent to me through the ether.”
Needless to say, we deeply connect with The Cadence of Rhyme‘s artistry, and have added Surprise Me to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream his growing wider discography.
