Drawing us in with an intricate, cerebral soundscape featuring astral yet subversive nuances and a voicemail note, Jade Barbara opens breathe (a little) with dimensionality and industrial ethereality. Jade invites us to inhale and exhale as she shares her situational reality with us.
We appreciate the fuzz bassline juxtaposed with Jade’s cosmic falsetto and her 90s meets Y2K sonic aesthetic. As for the lyrics, they are relatable and laced with clever metaphors. The track is danceable and fierce, tapping into notions of nostalgia but also a sense of futurism that fans of Charli xcx might be able to connect with.
The Spanish language moments are cute and add pizazz to the already boundless track. We learn that the song was inspired by a real-life story that Jade encountered. The star shares that it was about someone who felt trapped in a relationship they had emotionally outgrown but couldn’t leave.

Jade shares that this moment stayed with her, eventually evolving into a message of stepping back and learning to breathe on your own. We love the stripped-back middle-eight which allows for reflection before an epic final verse.
Overall, there is a 3LW meets Destiny’s Child vibe manifesting with breathe (a little), although the subject matter stands alone in its own conscious energy. Jade confesses, “Though I’ve released casual music from my bedroom in the past, I truly believe this song feels like my real debut single, and I’m so excited for the public to hear it. I think it’s the beginning of something really great.”
Needless to say, we are in awe, and look forward to footage from Jade Barbara‘s upcoming Sydney show, and new music from the artist! In the meantime, we have added breathe (a little) to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Jade’s 2025 album, ultraviolet!
