Establishing the mood with an intricate and rippling piano performance with astral riffs and brooding bass notes, detailed by subtle cymbal textures, the Lars Pagelsen Trio opens Don’t You Cry with intimacy and warmth.
The opus expands with textured percussion and double bass to create a cohesive and emotive tapestry of sound. The piano is poetic, whilst the rhythmic elements of the bass add a cinematic nuance to the piece. The percussion is soft and palpable, creating subtle dynamism and elegance.
There is no doubt that the composition would be perfect for a smokey jazz bar, or indeed the score of a Luca Guadagnino film. The energy of the piece picks up with a more rhythmic approach to percussion as the piano finds its flow, manifesting a more dimensional approach and building with drama.
We appreciate the climax and tempo shift into a more joyous and optimistic vibe. This is reflective of the title of the track, Don’t You Cry, and it is clear that the intention of the composer is to transmute melancholia into euphoria.
Mid-way through the piece we are met with a meditative respite, jarring discordant keys that remind us that bliss is impermanent, and that life is truly comprised of ebbs and flows. In this space, the silence speaks volumes. The syncopated rhythms invite us to reflect. This liminal space exists for almost two minutes before a subtle rebuild brings us back to life, although there is never a return to the form, more a placid wandering through time and space.

Gentle and peaceful. It’s almost as if the message is to embrace the balance and not get too overwhelmed by the ups and downs of life, but to find your own rhythm as long as peace is at the forefront.
We learn that pianist and composer Lars Pagelsen, bassist Alisa Pou Montz and drummer Felix Lothwesen have been playing together since 2025, focusing their artistry on “emotional depth, attentive interplay and music that breathes.”
We appreciate the philosophical composition, and have added Don’t You Cry to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of the Lars Pagelsen Trio, including Inner Peace, Lime Juice, and 22 Years.
