Setting the tone with a dimensional bass lick, astral ad-libs and playful saxophone with intricate percussion, Jill Desiree opens Broken with an R&B-jazz hybrid adjacency as she shares situational prose with a delicate timbre.
Jill sings the words, “Spent some time, planned to dine, on my dime for you, I served my heart on a platter, set the table, poured a glass of wine, music on cue, but nothing I do ever matters…”. We immediately connect with the authenticity and vulnerability that the track exudes.
In essence, Broken is a song that uses food and dining as metaphors for love. Jill describes giving everything, notably her time, care, and emotion, to someone who no longer values it. Her partner has lost interest and found affection elsewhere. This notion of betrayal leaves Jill feeling foolish and discarded.
The imagery of broken plates and shattered glass reflects the concept of a damaged heart. Jill realizes that her partner only wanted physical attention, and not a real connection. She feels like a temporary distraction, not truly loved. This realization brings her pain, numbness, and a sense of being taken for granted.
Despite the hurt though, Jill decides to take her power back. We appreciate the catharsis that manifests. She understands she must heal herself and stop ignoring her emotional wounds. Leaving the relationship is necessary and long overdue. The final message is one of empowering self-respect, clarity, and choosing to move on.

Jill confesses, “Broken is especially close to my heart. I started writing it at a young age, drawing from the pain and frustrations I felt in my relationships at the time. After leaving it unfinished for years, I finally reached out to producer David Olivas, and together, we brought it to life.”
The rising star, who was born in Australia and raised in Indonesia, cites inspirations including Erykah Badu’s Baduizm and Rachelle Ferrell’s Individuality, as well as Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, and Whitney Houston, which we can feel on Broken. The cohesive tapestry of sound blends flawlessly with Jill’s vocals, and we appreciate the instrumental interlude, the keys and sax solos, and the final reprise!
We could imagine Broken locking in a number of sync deals – perhaps a romantic movie with similar themes or a TV show like My Life With the Walter Boys. Naturally, we are in awe, and have added Broken to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Jill Desiree, including Wolves, and Dienda!
