Establishing the mood with a rhythmic electric guitar soundscape and a touch of grit, Irina Imme opens Rather Die with raw honesty as she sings, “I never thought that it would come to this, I guess I thought I’m finally equipped, but yet again I’m struggling not to drink, I haven’t washed my dishes in a week…
We are immediately enthralled by the unfolding narrative and the authenticity that Irina Imme shares as she conveys her lived experience. It’s fair to say that Rather Die is relatable in this day and age, when we are faced rising economic pressures, social isolation, unrealistic digital comparison, chronic work stress, and declining community support systems that leave us emotionally exhausted.
In this case, Irina Imme zooms into notions of unrequited love as she sings the hook, “I would rather die than let you know I miss you…”. Irina confesses, “This song was inspired by my own experience with being ghosted by someone that I had feelings for.”
There is a timeless cinematic quality that the song manifests, and there is no doubt that Rather Die would be a perfect fit for a TV show like 13 Reasons Why, or My Life With the Walter Boys. It is also intensely catchy, produced with Dave Tither.

Irina cites early Avril Lavigne, early Taylor Swift, Radiohead, and Cage The Elephant as sonic influences, which we can absolutely feel come to life with the poignancy of the prose and the angsty vibes that the song exudes.
The rising star also confesses, “It is the continuation of the story told on my previous single, Boxes. It’s a song that deals with the internal conflict of missing someone that you logically know you’re better off without. This song is bound to resonate with anyone that has been ghosted or left by someone they had strong feelings for.”
Naturally, we connect with the track, and have added Rather Die to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Irina Imme‘s growing discography, including Back to Me, Jonah, and Welcome Back!
