Our obsession with VANNGO grows with every listen, so naturally, we wanted to cover his latest release, Avenue of Shattered Dreams. The emotive song hits like a slow burn. It opens with a haze of grit and city streets, as the star sings, “Woke up high on the low side clean, cheap tattoo from a burned-out scene…”, which sets the mood with a cinematic allure. We feel the weight of nights spent in motion – half-lost, and half-searching.
The acoustic guitar is timeless, evoking the dark, melancholy tones of House of the Rising Sun. The subtle piano motifs are sublime, and linger under the guitar, adding an emotional dimensionality to the track.
Of course, VANNGO’s voice is raw, laced with grit and authenticity. The delivery matches the lyrics perfectly. We can hear the ache and his resilience, as well as the quiet stubbornness of someone who is seeking to move forwards. This part is catharsis. He comments, “This raw folk rack ballad is about heartbreak, resilience, and the moments that push you to keep going when the road isn’t smooth.”
The lyrics are highly cinematic, as with the star’s wider body of work. Lines like, “Slow lane lover in a fast-talk town, truth gets quiet when the sun goes down…” truly bring to life the depth of VANNGO‘s universe with notions of heartbreak, memory, and survival.
Instrumentally, the track is subtle and masterful. Nothing is overdone. The piano punctuates whilst the guitar carries and the dynamics shift naturally. We could imagine the track locking in a sync deal for films like Lost in Translation, Blue Valentine, or Manchester by the Sea.
As you can tell, we are in awe of Avenue of Shattered Dreams. Its brooding, honest, and quietly powerful nature is tangible, and we have added the track to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the growing discography of VANNGO, and anticipate future releases from the legendary artist.
