Drawing us in with a dimensional guitar soundscape with textured drums and a dynamic bassline, Martin Kuiper opens Ego with philosophical prose and wisdom with a charismatic delivery. We immediately connect with the message of the song and the depth that Martin imbues with his word.
The power pop harmonies add a high emotional quotient to the piece, which also demonstrates instrumental mastery and a sense of timelessness in its design. There is a cinematic allure that manifests, and there is no doubt that Ego would be perfect for a range of synch deals, perhaps a coming-of-age movie that resonates directly with the lyrical content.
In essence, the song portrays ego as both a shield and a trap. Through intelligently crafted lyrics like, “You need to be on a diet of ego-killing eye drops to cure your 1D vision…”, Martin Kuiper invites us to self-reflect with humility. This message feels highly zeitgeist considering the state of the world today and we applaud Martin for his intentional nature.

The repeated chorus suggests that true connection comes from within, as opposed to from external validation. Ultimately, Ego calls for balance. It is a poignant message for us to shine without arrogance, and to find freedom beyond self-importance.
After releasing his synth-influenced EP Dreaming Of A Sea Of Time in April of this year, Ego marks the first single from Martin’s upcoming rock album Prison Of Modesty, due in June 2026. Martin confesses how the idea for Ego came shortly after he became a father. Reflecting on his own upbringing, he noticed how being the centre of attention as a child can nurture an unchecked ego.
Naturally, we love what he is creating, and have added Ego to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Dreaming Of A Sea Of Time, and anticipate the release of his album!
