We recently featured The New Citizen Kane for his high emotional quotient on the captivating and authentic single, San Diego, so when we heard that the talented artist was back with the uniquely titled, Ratbag Joy, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience!
Establishing the mood with a cerebral, down pitched introduction with the words, “You don’t care, you’re already lost…”, expanding with a pristine pop soundscape, The New Citizen Kane opens Ratbag Joy with the situational lyrics, “Your sins are high on a low down drive, money to burn and love on your mind…”
The opus expands with introspection and subversion, tapping into a lived experience that many of us can relate to. We appreciate the candid rawness that the track exudes, something we are learning is a familiar trait with The New Citizen Kane‘s lyrical universe.
The production is dance-floor friendly, whilst the actual content of the song is highly intentional – tapping into metaphorical depth and the art of juxtaposition. The rising artist confesses, “The lyrics paint a picture of someone teetering on the edge, chasing fleeting highs, and desperately trying to outrun the hollowness within.”
The New Citizen Kane continues, “It’s heavy stuff, a raw and honest glimpse into the pursuit of temporary pleasure as a means of avoiding deeper issues.” Once again, the track is synch deal friendly – perhaps an episode of Euphoria, or a scene from the upcoming Heartstopper movie!
Ratbag Joy bursts with infectious, bouncy energy. It is feel-good introspection at its best. Beneath its cheerful sound lies a darker message as The New Citizen Kane uses music as a mask to help us escape reality. The track comes with a glitch-pop, self-directed video designed to mirror the song’s chaotic charm. It even comes with a slew of epic remixes, perfectly designed for every single mood!
We appreciate the intentional depth that The New Citizen Kane creates with. His artistry is thoughtful, palatable and contemporary enough to satiate the mainstream. Naturally, we have added Ratbag Joy to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to enjoy the lyric and music video, and listen to all of the remixes as well as The New Citizen Kane‘s exquisite, growing discography!
