Our obsession with Gin Wife seems to grow with every listen! We perviously featured her stunning and thought-provoking debut single, Rat Race, and her sophomore single Comedian, so when we heard that the witty and charismatic star was back with Pro Golfers, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience!
Pro Golfers kicks off with a cerebral frequency, expanding into a rhythmic, indie-pop guitar soundscape with astral ad libs before Gin Wife shares a sublime vocal performance with her signature brand of unique storytelling with a zeitgeist yet relatable message.
There is no doubt that Gin Wife is a masterful lyricist, and Pro Golfers is another example that cements this depth and her philosophical approach to song creation. The track serves as a sarcastic anthem that pokes fun at the absurdity and ego of golf culture. She tells us how it was inspired by an unexpected bonding trip to the driving range. “This song is a sarcastic love song to pro golfers as I find them incredibly unappealing,” Gin Wife admits.
“Oh how I long for a love from only those, handsome Pro Golfers, they keep the world afloat… Athletic champions who make my heart soar…”, sings the genius songwriter, also known as Sierra Torres. The song is kinda perfect for an array of synch deals, a Netflix TV show like Sirens, or a romantic comedy with a strong female protagonist, perhaps a sequel to Cruel Intentions or the upcoming season of The Politician!
Gin Wife‘s sardonic fused with lo-fi authenticity is absolutely captivating. We learn that the song was recorded in 2023 at The Shed in Savannah, Tennessee, in a makeshift backyard studio with thick with pollen, laughter, and an “unholy amount of pickle-backs and beer.” As Gin Wife puts it, “We tracked the vocals between allergy attacks that I had from the fresh-cut grass and pollen that coated every surface.” That chaos transmuted into magic.
The rising star cites inspirations including The Strokes, Stella Donnelly, and Momma, but it is abundantly clear that Gin Wife is manifesting a sound unique to her own design and consistent across her cohesive discography to date.
