We recently featured Honey by KaiserKillers, which brought to life the notion of punk romance with conscious escapism, so when we found out that the band was back with Heavenly in Black, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Opening with a dimensional an almost psychedelic adjacent classic rock energy with compressed vocals, KaiserKillers share situational yet metaphorical prose as they draw us back into their sonic universe.
We deeply connect with the timeless energy and repeated notions, that feel almost akin to a mantra. The vocal switch up is genius, giving us a transportive energy before returning to form before an out of this world guitar solo that sends us astral.
The song is about a girl named Beverly, who looked stunning in black. The band wrote it after Beverly complained that her name was never featured in songs. The lyrics reflect a recurring theme in KaiserKillers’ music – a nostalgic remembrance of a girl that lead singer, Johnny, once knew.

KaiserKillers consists of Johnny Zero, Cristi Mac Seáin, and Stix McIntosh, who combine their influences of punk, mod, and classic rock bands like the Buzzcocks, Blondie, The Beatles, and The Smiths to manifest their sound. For the song, Johnny added a unique touch to the recording by creating a metallic ‘ring’ sound using a spanner suspended on a wire and a toffee hammer. We absolutely love details like this!
We learn that Heavenly in Black was recorded at Strawberry Field in Colchester and mixed by the brilliant Francis Gorini at London Mastering Studio. It is no surprise that KaiserKillers have already received airplay on stations like Boogaloo Radio, Amazing Radio, and Punk Rock Demonstration.
The band had the chance to share a cute anecdote with us and mentioned that during an outdoor gig, their drummer’s hair caught fire when he stashed a lit cigarette behind his ear – luckily, a half glass of beer saved the day!
Naturally, we love what KaiserKillers are creating, and have added Heavenly in Black to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of the band and anticipate future releases!
