Setting the tone with textured, syncopated drums and an astral guitar melody, SkyCall open Wendy with intrigue, dimensionality and an atmospheric vocal, as they share metaphorical prose with reference to their muse.
We are immediately captivated by Fabrice Duval‘s charismatic presence, reminding us of a certain French icon named M, also known as, Matthieu Chedid, as well as bandmate Luc Erwin‘s exemplary presence on the bass. Fabrice’s brand of storytelling is poignant and playful, and we appreciate the emotional depth that he conveys with his soundscape and prose.
Speaking on the message of Wendy, SkyCall confess, “Lyrically this song tells the story of Wendy, whose life is made of disillusionment and broken dreams; she forgets herself in artificial paradises before suddenly returning to reality when the effects wear off.”
The talented creator, who is also a neuropsychiatrist by day, adds, “The message is far from being pessimistic, since we always have the choice: if she wants and agree to be helped, Wendy has within her all the strength that can help her to rebuild herself and finally live her life to make it a masterpiece.”
The guitar performances are sublime and we love the solos which tap into a transcendental energy, showcasing Fabrice Duval‘s epic skill, reminiscent of 80s bands like Dire Straits. We learn that Wendy was recorded in the Studio (Colmar/France) and mastered by Alexandros Chrysidis (Sierra Studios in Athens – Greece), with production by none other than Fabrice Duval himself, bien sûr!
With reference to his influences, Fabrice mentions psychedelic rock and Jimi Hendrix as his primary influence, along with Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Santana, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young, which comes through abundantly in his sound, although there is no doubt that SkyCall is manifesting a universe unto its own.
We love what the project stands for and the intentional depth of Wendy. We have added the track to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our brand new TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we anticipate future releases from SkyCall!
