Ski Babi shines a light on gun culture with dimensional new composition, 33+1

We recently featured Ski Babi as he inspired catharsis and neuroplasticity with his extraordinary composition, Sweetheart, so naturally, we wanted to explore his wider discography and discovered 33+1!

The track kicks off with an immersive, astral synth with a coin drop and cerebral ad libs before a pounding bassline guides us further into Ski Babi‘s universe. The opus showcases the dimensionality and dynamism that we have come to expect from Ski Babi, and with the clocking of a gun and shots fired before an expansive riser, we are kept on our toes throughout the composition.

A melodic synth riff evokes a warmer sentiment, before a warbling bassline amplifies the journey once again. We appreciate the cosmic ebbs and flows of the piece, and the cohesive nature of what Ski Babi creates. The repeated shots fired remind us of the darkness of the physical world, whilst the celestial overarching themes invite us to connect on a profound level with the universe.

Speaking on the conceptual nature of the track, Ski Babi confesses, “The song [is] inspired by the gun culture in Richmond, [Virginia], and the title references the magazine capacity of the largest extended oem magazine for most 9mm Glock pistols.”

The star continues with personal depth, “It’s the magazine I sometimes use with my Glock 17. I don’t carry it. I carry a Glock 48 because it’s easier to conceal. I don’t like guns at all. Don’t get that misconstrued. I have them because I can hear gunfire, sometimes in the distance sometimes on my block, literally every night of the week. The song is supposed to seamlessly blend the sounds of excited kids yelling in joy with gunfire and bullet casings hitting the concrete. It is supposed to be haunting and threatening yet unnoticeably so when first experiencing it – just like the city I call home.”

We love the philosophical depth that Ski Babi creates with, and have added 33+1 to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our new TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to explore his discography, and anticipate future releases from the talented artist.
