It is no secret that we are super fans of the talented Genevieve Sovereign, having covered a slew of her previous releases. Naturally, when we heard that the star was back with Random Number, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Kicking off with a rapid-fire delivered introduction, echoing a more cerebral energy with hyperpop adjacency than what we have previously heard from the creator, Genevieve Sovereign taps into an 8-bit, glitch-pop vibe for Random Number, and needless to say, we are completely mesmerized.
The opus showcases astral risers, syncopated production and a playful and subversive edge. We appreciate the uniqueness of the instrumental design, and the whirring, high-octane, celestial journey that we are taken on by the multi-disciplinary artist.
We learn that Random Number is the philosophical lead single for Genevieve Sovereign‘s in-progress experimental electronic project, “STARSEEDS WANTED: enquire within”. We appreciate the visionary and conscious approach to song creation, and love the intentional nature of the overarching project – needed now more than ever!
Random Number was co-written with producer and multi-instrumentalist Michael Wheeler, designed as “a playful adventure into the chance and fortunes life offers, through every choice we’re faced with.” The creators tell us how the composition was initially built with vocal samples casually recorded during Sovereign’s first visit to Wheeler’s studio in early February 2024, where “inspiration hit almost instantly.”
Speaking on the release, Genevieve Sovereign confesses, “This was very possibly the smoothest, quickest and yet most organic track I’ve ever done. In a way, it seemed to create itself and I was just along for the ride!”
It is often the most universally aligned pieces of art that manifest the quickest, and it feels like Random Number is a valid example of just this!
