Establishing the mood with a rippling, immersive soundscape with serene, astral ad libs, Adrielle Bow Belle opens Small Talk with philosophical prose and atmospheric vocals as she sings, “I hate small talk, turn the music up and keep on walking…”
The star continues with an assertive nature and self-realized depth as she conveys poignant lyricism and high emotional quotient with reference to the collective traumas of our society and planet. Speaking succinctly on her message, Adrielle confesses, “The Palestinian liberation movement and ongoing genocide in Gaza inspired this track. The idea of a FREE PALESTINE has significant interconnectedness with the Black collective, and all marginalized people working until equity, inclusion, and fairness are a reality for everyone and not just some.”
The visionary and conscious recording artist continues, “The idea that the topic of Palestine is too ‘taboo’ to discuss, so people either say nothing or tip toe around the hard conversations. Even Jewish people get shunned for daring to say “not in our name” and “never again for anyone.” I hate small talk in the face of injustice occurring anywhere in the world. Silence is violence. So let’s sing about it.”
It is abundantly clear that Adrielle Bow Belle is a visionary that not only knows herself, but believes deeply in her artistry and the power of music for liberation. Channelling her energy into Small Talk and her wider discography into anti-oppression activism should not be considered brave, but in the society that we live in, it is. She adds, “My music is only controversial if you’re not paying attention to what’s happening in the world.”
Music has long served as a powerful tool for activism, channeling emotions, inspiring change, and uniting communities in the pursuit of social justice. Through her poignant lyrics, stirring melodies, and impassioned performance, Adrielle Bow Belle evokes deep-seated emotions, sparks introspection, and ignites a sense of solidarity.
The opus is a delectable song for protest, resistance, and empowerment, and serves as an anthem for the social movements that need our attention the most, rallying individuals to stand up against injustice, inequality, and oppression. The cathartic nature Small Talk allows us to express our frustrations, anger, and hopes for a better world, providing a platform for marginalized voices to be heard and amplified.
The quality of what Adrielle Bow Belle delivers is phenomenal. The New Yorker performs with grace and transmutes wisdom with every riff. Her harmonies are divine, and the composition showcases nothing short of instrumental mastery.
The star cites Lauryn Hill, Tracy Chapman, Tupac, Aaliyah, Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson as some of her sonic influences, which we definitely feel come though in her refined and captivating output, but it is also clear that Adrielle Bow Belle is manifesting a peace-inspired universe of her own.
