Our obsession with Sam Feinstein seems to grow with every listen. We previously featured the talented creator for his intricate and thought-provoking debut single, Chasing the Bull, and the relatable commentary on the woes of employment with his sophomore single, Hamster Wheel, so when we heard that the visionary artist was back with Maslow’s Mountain, we were curious and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Drawing us in with a fierce guitar performance, subversive vocals and dynamic, rolling drums, the opus switches up with charisma and evocative passion as the star takes us on a cerebral journey laced with artistic nuance and instrumental dimensionality.
We connect deeply with the authenticity and roaring vocals, as well as the intricate, astral guitar riffs. The middle eight is dramatic, re-building with a tambourine – truly an instrument that isn’t used nearly enough in modern rock.
We learn that Maslow’s Mountain is indeed inspired by Eurovison songs, designed “to critique the difficulty of achieving self-actualization in a world where we have to work-hard and struggle to meet our most basic needs of food, shelter, and healthcare.” Sam tells us, “While aspirations of fulfillment are no easy feat, they are ones that we all must constantly strive towards.”
When discussing his influences, Sam cites Tom Waits, Frank Zappa, and The Eurythmics, which we love, but there is absolutely no doubt that Sam Feinstein is manifesting a unique sound of his own.
Based out of San Jose, California, Sam is also the bassist for a few San Jose based bands, including synth-pop trio The Monitors, who are now playing both Maslow’s Mountain and Hamster Wheel as part of their live sets! Testament to his creative greatness.
We love Sam Feinstein‘s philosophical depth, and have added Maslow’s Mountain to our New Music Spotlight playlist, as well as our brand new TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream Sam’s growing discography, and await future releases from the rockstar.
