Our obsession with millhope seems to grow with every listen. We recently featured his transcendental new opus, Prototype as well as his expansive and evocative debut single, Illusion, so when we heard that the rising talent was set to release, Reflection, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our feelings.
Establishing the mood with a dimensional soundscape featuring evocative frequencies, textured percussion and reverberating bells, millhope initially takes us on an intricate and somewhat meditative trip with the composition.
Reflection starts with cosmic nuance to deliver a serene experience laced with intimate detailing before evolving into a robust and dynamic tapestry of sound.
Stripped back moments rebuild into bold structures, lending themselves to an 8-bit adjacent vibe before a psychedelic current washes over us transporting us deeper into the celestial universe that millhope creates so masterfully.
The Cologne-based producer and musician, also known as Thomas Mühlhoff creates with the intention to “immerse [us] in his ethereal soundscape”. Reflection boasts a harmonious blend of post-rock and ambient and we are captivated as it unfolds as a mellow and trippy journey brimful of hypnotic detailing and genius nuance.
We learn that the piece was composed in millhope‘s homestudio in Cologne, and we deeply appreciate the creators use of spacious synthesizers which in turn weave a “dreamy and energetic atmosphere, inviting us [into] a sonic sanctuary.”
Fans of millhope may overlap those of with Tycho, Deerhunter, and STRFKR, but there is no doubt that Thomas Mühlhoff is seeking to master a destiny of his own. In the last two decades he has worked with artists such as Susanne Dobrusski (nominated for the Echo® with her band Dob Russkin), Jenny Thiele, Kai Otten, Geysir, and many others.
We have added Reflection to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream millhope‘s growing discography, and anticipate future releases from the star.
