Drawing us in with a cinematic, folk-pop soundscape featuring a luscious strings arrangement and intricate guitar, War Violet opens Different Formations with thought-provoking and expansive prose.
We connect with the metaphorical and emotional nature of the star’s lyricism, as well as her choral harmonies. The nuance of the astral flute creates a captivating tapestry of sound in unison with the newly signed artist’s serene vocal.
War Violet‘s poetic prowess is impressive, and the journey that she takes us on feels timeless, yet universal. With reference to the track, War Violet confesses, “This song was written at a time when I was dealing with insomnia. In my half-asleep half-awake state I often felt as if I was floating above Earth.”
She continues, “I observed Earth from afar as a spectator, and thought to myself, if I was not here, then where would I be? Different Formations is about coming to terms with the decay of our Earth and atmosphere, and our search for meaning. It is about the ways in which we live on Earth like we want to escape it. A letter to the wonderful and horrifying chaos, a place where there is extreme beauty, but also decay, all happening at once.”
We learn that War Violet is also known as Olajumoke ‘Jummy’ Aremu, based in New York City and recently signed to Bella Union. We appreciate her intentional and conscious depth, and cannot wait to hear her debut album, which we are told is nearing completion!
The record is set to further explore themes of “isolation, alienation, identity, and loss, emerging from a dream and a nightmare”, as the creator poses the philosophical question, “what do we fill with these open spaces?” with the goal to illuminate our minds.
We have added Different Formations to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we watch the intimate music video for the song, continue to stream War Violet‘s EP, Getaway, and anticipate the release of her debut album!
