Setting the tone with an intricate, acapella vocal performance, Nina Ross opens her cover of Plastic Mermaids‘ Milk with the signature lyrics, “Across the table, you glance over at me, then you shamelessly knock back a jug of milk…”
The opus expands with keys and a nuanced beat as the rising star shares her soul with introspective prose and an ethereal, atmospheric energy. Needless to say, we are in awe as she asks, “How long for something you’re not so happy with? How long will I have to try? How long till you see the sky’s not falling on you?”
The song’s meaning is themed around “witnessing someone you love flounder in the face of hidden hurts and the difficult circumstances and emotions surrounding that”, and Nina brings it to life with tangible emotive prowess.
The song comes with a textured, mood visual that is rather mesmerizing. We learn that the Isle of Wight based vocalist chose to cover the song of a fellow band from the island off the coast of the UK, as they connected via drummer, Chris Jones. We appreciate Nina’s stripped-back, melancholic version of the song which builds into a chilled, trip-hop, electronica vibe.
Sharing her rationale behind the release, Nina confesses, “The band released an acoustic version of the song in lockdown and as soon as I heard it I was transfixed by its emotional strength and vulnerability. I knew I wanted to sing it. I connected with the experience of hiding emotions away and the impact of that on others. It gives me huge pleasure to share their amazing music too, I’m a massive fan.”
We appreciate the cover and have added Nina Ross‘ version of Milk to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream the original and acoustic versions by Plastic Mermaids, and anticipate future releases from the rising star.
