As huge fans of Wotts, we were stoked to see that they had just released their brand new single, wheel. Opening with intricate acoustic guitar layers, the iconic duo launch wheel with their signature vocal stylings and the philosophical lyrics, “Look how he got away, get back down you gotta pray, don’t stray, they say that’s just how it goes…”
With nuanced and designed vocal add libs and harmonic detailing, wheel builds with intrigue and dimensionality to unveil a catchy and anthemic number. Glistening bells accompany the chorus, and have us mesmerised.
We love the message of the song, the tweeting birds, the horns, the dope vocal risers and the tangible authenticity that the Canadian duo share with their words. The pair cite Dayglow and Djo as specific references for this piece, which we can feel come though, although wheel is still aligned to the wider discography of Wotts, but with it’s own unique and organic vibe which really resonates with us!
The pair confess that wheel is about “surrendering to life and to a certain extent, mortality.” They tell us it’s “a bit heavy for a band that’s used to making songs about love and heartbreak”, but Wotts love to say, “You go where the song takes you”, as they channel their unique experiences and energy into their art.
With reference to the organic recording process of the song, producer Jayem says, “We’ve been completely DIY since we started. But there was something telling us that we needed to use real horns and strings this time around. We still wrote all the parts, but we brought in other musicians to help give it an orchestral vibe. Ultimately we wanted everything sounding super natural.”
There is no doubt that Wotts have succeeded in creating an out-of-this-world experience with their latest release, and we have added wheel to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Wotts, and anticipate future releases!
