Setting the tone with a textured riser and a luscious dance pop synthscape, Max M opens Used to Be with atmospheric vocals and the situational lyrics, “Flowers drying up, petals falling down, we used to be enough, feel like it’s running out…”
The opus expands into a vibrant and anthemic energy with meaningful prose and poetic nuance. We appreciate the depth that Max M shares, and the intricacy of his production, the climactic nature of the builds and the immersive instrumentation.
Passionate about music since he was a teenager, we learn that Max M has been mixing and composing since the age of fourteen and his sonic designs are made for dancing; Used to Be is the perfect example of this.
Used to Be comes with an evocative and cinematic music video directed by Alex&Fab, which sees a fast food robot escape from his mundane role at a diner, go on an adventure which includes hitch hiking in a red convertible Mercedes and a trip to the beach, before he returns to his job to free his fellow robot friend from the constraints of junk food capitalism.
Max M confesses that the message of the visual is “to start a new chapter and leave the past behind.” We have added Used to Be to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream his wider discography including Coming Through and Imaginary Problems.
