Setting the tone with an acoustic folk-rock energy, Coconut Shy opens Water, Water with charisma, intrigue and the situational lyrics, “You pulled up in a yellow Corvette, told me something I’ll never forget…”
The expands into a charming tale, laced with metaphors, about “the difficulties of pulling yourself out of the past and propelling yourself towards the future”. We appreciate the depth, consciousness and poetic prowess that Coconut Shy shares with his artistry.
The Melbourne based rising artist expands in detail and tells us, “The first verse represents the moment one realises things are about to change, or that a good thing is about to meet its end.” He elaborates, “The second verse describes the constant brooding that can follow for weeks, months or even years afterwards. The chorus describes the antidote to this: to appreciate the simple things in life (namely, ‘water’) and to ‘stop and smell the roses’, so to speak.”
We learn that the song was recorded in a single day at the Four Doors recording studio in Melbourne, and we love the dynamic energy that Coconut Shy delivers as well as his connection to the powerful element as he sings, “Water, water, come and spill some life on me…”
Coconut Shy wrote Water, Water simultaneously with another song, The Finest Day, which is the second single that the artist plans to release before the year is out. He comments, “The way the writing process unfolded was so strange and unexpected. I had the one idea for a song, but it sort of spilled out into two different versions. I think of them as twins.”
