It has been an incredible year for IRYS with the releases of the sultry, immersive and hypnotizing single, Weirdo, and the self-realized and introspective, Riot, so we couldn’t wait to hear her latest release, Borderline!
Drawing us in with reverbing electric guitar notes, a dimensional bassline and an elegant, padded drum riff, IRYS opens Borderline with the situational lyrics, “Shattered on a doorstep, it was borderline, oh, won’t go back, cannot sit in a hollow, need to get up…”
The composition expands into the signature dark pop energy that we love from IRYS, as she not only cements her sound, but her exquisite lyrical universe with powerful metaphors. Highlights include the empowering “Don’t need no savior”, and the boundary enforcing hook “Never gonna turn back, if I’m to leave”.
Speaking on the release, which hold a polished lo-fi vibe, in comparison to her other releases, IRYS comments, “I created Borderline in my bedroom, which lately also serves as my home studio. I started with a guitar riff that was originally part of an older song that had been sitting on my hard disc forever! I then built a whole new song around it.”
The rising and visionary artist elaborates, “My aim was to create a dark, chill, and sexy tune that is easy to listen to but, at the same time, has a deeper meaning.”
“For me, Borderline describes a state on a fine line between darkness and light. It’s about feeling shaky while trying to get out of a difficult place, but it’s also about overcoming battles and becoming a stronger version of yourself. It’s about acknowledging the struggle but also about hope. I made this song for everyone who’s going through a dark time!”
We appreciate the depth that IRYS shares with her artistry and sound, and there is no doubt that fans of Billie Eilish and Lana Del Rey will be able to connect with IRYS, although the self produced artist is certainly expanding her own sonic architecture.
