By now you will know that we are huge fans of Gully! We recently covered his vivid and dimensional single, See The Sun and his intricate hybrid-jazz single, The View, so we were very happy to hear that he just released New Kicks!
Immersing us with luscious keys and a dynamic bassline, expanding with bold drums, Gully opens New Kicks with his signature vocal style that we fell in love with. The artist has an incredible ability to create unique sounding songs, in line with his aesthetic that are unequivocally “Gully”, yet nuanced and original in their own right. New Kicks is an example of this.
Gully sings the hook “It’s like a new type of music, you got me dancing in my New Kicks...”, which delivers the energy of hearing a song that you love for the first time, so much so that you are inspired to dance, no matter what the risk.
The rising artist from the United Kingdom tells us, “New Kicks is a bop about wanting to dance with someone so much that you’ll sacrifice your new shoes to do so.”
Describing his artistry, Gully confesses, “My music is a mix of euphoric brass and big beats all wrapped up with the bow of an archer who keeps missing the target.” We appreciate the genre expansive nature that Gully exhibits, with a thread of nu-jazz running through its core.
Gully is an independent artist based in Bristol. Hailing originally from Portsmouth, his music began playing piano across the pubs of his hometown before drawing on the jazz and old soul influences of his repertoire and starting to write songs of his own.
Backed by his six-piece band, including a brass trio, which we hear eloquently on New Kicks, he has unsurprisingly garnered the praise of BBC Introducing in the West, Fresh On The Net, Radio Bristol and Radio Bath, drawing comparisons to the likes of Tom Misch, Amy Winehouse, Easy Life and Cosmo Pyke.
We have added New Kicks to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Gully‘s wider discography including Rain and Wasted.
