Gully re-introduces himself on intricate hybrid-jazz single, The View

We recently featured the brilliant rising UK-based artist Gully for his vivid and dimensional single, See The Sun, so we were thrilled to hear that he was about to release another single, The View.

Opening with a hybrid-jazz vocal teasing the opening lyrics of the song, fused with an elegant trumpet strikes and percussive details, Gully begins the narrative of the song with the lyrics, “This is the sentimental thoughts collector…”

As The View expands, Gully confesses that the song is inspired by the “ubiquitous feeling shared amongst up-and-coming artists that a lot of the music we create is falling on deaf ears, drowned out by the shouting match that is the 21st century world.”

The introspective artist continues, “It is thusly an introduction to myself, Gully, for those who don’t yet know me and it is also a plea to those closed-eared masses to take a break from society’s circadian rhythms and just enjoy the birdsong.”

Gully is a highly talented artist and performs vocals as well as playing trumpet, trombone, saxophone, keys, guitar, bass and drums. The View marks his second single of the year.

The confident and self-aware artist says, “As a singer who originally came from Portsmouth, a seaside city where the only music scene was playing piano in pubs, this song is a fanfare and proclamation that despite humble beginnings, I’m Gully and I’m here to stay. This is the View.”

Gully cites Easy Life, Louis Armstrong, Lizzo, Chance the Rapper, Nina Simone, Jack Garratt, Radiohead, NAO, Brasstracks, Supertramp and Queen as some of his influences, but is is clear that he is creating a universe of his own in sound and lyrics.

“So pleased to meet you…” sings Gully with vigour as he takes on the feelings of every emerging artist in the history of time. Though his cerebral frustrations aside, Gully has been slaying. He recently headlined the BBC Introducing Stage at Little Orchard Festival, Cornwall and has been Band of the Week multiple times on BBC Radio Bristol and BBC Radio Bath.

He leaves us with words of wisdom saying, “Change is the only constant. Find comedy in disaster, parity with those that wouldn’t otherwise be like minded and most importantly of all, believe in yourself. Keep climbing, Sisyphus! There’s a view to enjoy at the end.”

We stan Gully and his message and have added The View to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and continue to explore his wider discography!
