We recently featured Dream of a Man in a Top Hat as they shared their wisdom on the subversive, All Time Is Borrowed Time, so we were thrilled to hear that they just released their brand new single, Cold Hard Dirt.
Establishing the mood with enigmatic electric guitar fused with a cymbal crash, immersive drums and vocal textures, Dream of a Man in a Top Hat open their new single, Cold Hard Dirt with the introspective lyrics “What do you want me to do? What do you want me to say?”
Cold Hard Dirt expands with a subversive and psychedelic, post punk meets alternative rock frequency to deliver a cosmic country vibe with philosophical lyricism as they sing the hook “Cold Hard Dirt“, before we experience harmonica detailing and cosmic and psychedelic nuanced synths.
At moments, the soundscape is syncopated, whilst the instrumentation is unique to the developing sonic landscape of the rising duo from Boston. Dream of a Man in a Top Hat has seen their songs placed in over sixty Spotify playlists (including those from Melting Trends, Obscure Sound, We Love Lo-fi, and Indie Rock Cafe), cracked the SubmitHub top ten charts for experimental rock, and received many positive reviews for their previously released EP and album.
Dream of a Man in a Top Hat are two thirds of Boston 80’s post-punk band Native Tongue, comprised of Lee Leffler on guitars, keyboards, vocals and lyrics, along with Michael Frackleton on drums, bass, percussion, keyboards, vocals and also lyrics.
We appreciate the artwork for Cold Hard Dirt which is symbolic of the lyricism of the song and it’s existential nature. The instrumental segment with a bright and psychedelic synth detail is particularly captivating and we feel transported by their unique cosmic tapestry. A lyrical highlight is the situational, “Flat on my back, on a night that’s so black, with the stars gonna guide me to the Milky Way…”
We have added Cold Hard Dirt to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Dream of a Man in a Top Hat‘s wider discography including Unfamiliar Streets and All Time Is Borrowed Time.
