Fused with an enigmatic bassline and textured synths, Le!ghton opens her new single Uhoh with the situational lyrics, “Uhoh, I think you better run my dear, I called ahead and told them you were here and you got a gun…”
Uhoh expands into a moody alternative pop energy with a unique narrative telling the story of a female mafia boss who is fed up with the men thinking they can take over. The solution? She takes matters into her own hands and makes sure the men know whose in charge!
Lyrical highlights include the assertive, “You’ve got till the count of three mon cheri, whilst I’m being nice, you’ve got a choice, what will it be…” and the empowering “You thought you were a royal reigning over me, ha, well let me tell you I’m the queen of this dynasty…”
Le!ghton confesses that Uhoh draws inspiration from Cher, Alice Merton and Lawrence, although it is clear that she is creating a soundscape and universe of her own.
Speaking on the creative process of the track, Le!ghton says, “This is my favourite song I’ve ever written. I was in a bit of a rut after lock down not finding any inspiration to write, so I found myself on TikTok doing a random word challenge. I got the words gun, grandfather and royal. Which screamed ‘mafia’ too me, so I wrote a song about a female run Mafia!”
She adds, “Uhoh is the perfect Summer anthem for someone going through their ‘boss ass bitch’ era.” We appreciate Le!ghton‘s flow, harmonies and the bass drops, which dimensionalise the opus, and love the artwork with the wall that Le!ghton from newspaper cuttings and the lettering of the title of the track.
