Charlie Steady expands his universe with new double single, Once Upon a Time I Fell in Love/Out of Control Pathos

We recently featured Charlie Steady for his epic and expansive dimensional narrative with double single, Club 27/Cutting Contest and Sticks, so we were thrilled to unveil another part of the artist’s universe with his double release of Once Upon a Time I Fell in Love/Out of Control Pathos.

Setting the tone with an emotive and immersive piano delivery, Charlie Steady opens the latest double release with the single, Once Upon a Time I Fell in Love.

Fusing a traditional piano ballad with textured vocals and elements of synth pop, Charlie sings about the authenticity of a love connection with the introspective question, “am I opening up?”

Both songs are taken from Charlie Steady‘s upcoming conceptual album, Magpie, due for release in September 2022. The songs continue to recount the adventures of Magpie, the album’s main character, as they journey to become a musical star in the Big City; the place where all dreams of fame come true.

Speaking on the meaning and deeper narrative of the song, Charlie says, “Once Upon a Time I Fell in Love is about the insecurity we all have about giving and receiving love.”

He continues, “Magpie questions whether love is in their fate and whether love is something that can bring them happiness or will only serve to distract them from their creative journey.”

“The lyrics describe Magpie’s internal dialogue on what love means, both on a personal level and a larger philosophical scope”, details Charlie.

Next up is Out of Control Pathos which opens with glistening synth keys, expanding into drums and a vibrant guitar as Charlie sings about being happy in the city with a hybrid indie-pop soundscape.

Charlie confesses, “Out of Control Pathos is a song about Magpie’s excitement and future aspirations about finally making it to The Big City.”

The rising artist from Fresno adds, “The song [takes] inspiration from such artists like Mac Demarco, with his whimsical and optimistic lyrical style.”

We have added both songs to our New Music Spotlight playlist and continue to stream Charlie Steady‘s wider discography!
