Amsterdam trio, MY BABY, deliver epic genre-bending new record, sake sake sake

Setting the tone with a bouncing and vibrant soundscape, MY BABY opens their new album, sake sake sake with conceptual and subversive vocal delivery on the first track, stupid. Textured details expand into a more hyper production space, with sound effects, fused with assertive lyricism with the hook, “get out of my way stupid”.

We experience a bridge with vocal clarity as they sing emotively, “it’s such a shame, my intuition says don’t do it, it’s getting late, let everybody wait, I’m in a bad way…

The second track is gasoline which is a sultry and enigmatic production with elements of minimalism fused with the psychedelic sound effects that we are now becoming accustomed to from the trailblazing Amsterdam trio. We love the harmonies that are layered into the experience as the trio delivers a fierce and catchy vibe.

The record as a whole is produced with 5-time Grammy Award-winning Steve Dub (Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Daft Punk), which we start to feel come to life on the album.

a dream i dream, which also has a futuristic studio video, lends itself to a more atmospheric energy, whilst cry baby takes us to a more cerebral dimension. sake sake sake is the title track of the record and has a rockier edge and we love the ethereal bridge which has us enchanted.

fixed / broken has a moodier frequency and features more vulnerable lyricism, we particularly love the sitar featured on the track and the hypnotizing synth-string section that expands towards the end of the track that takes on a drum and bass dimension.

Next up is don’t fight it which takes us on a genre bending adventure with vocals that sound like they are from a Bollywood film. We are obsessed with the sonic diversity of the record which transforms MY BABY’s signature raw roots-based psychedelia into a sleek, futuristic vessel of nuanced pop.

People have said that MY BABY sounds like Dreamwave Pop, Goldfrapp, Ninja Tune back catalogue, lost weekends, groove-ridden psychedelia, Prince, The Black Keys, 90’s Trip Hop, but is is very clear that they are creating their own universe with this record.

everybody scream has a meditative ancient civilizations chanting vibe, functioning as a half way interlude for the album. it’s a set up, which is their highest streamed single from the record, takes us back to that rock vibe which we can imagine being really fun live.

MY BABY sell out live shows in every corner of the planet, they remain in perpetual demand all over.

unlike before has enigmatic and mysterious guitar chords that we love as they sing “we’ll do it all unlike before…” and about the apocalypse lending itself to a more introspective vibe. Fans of Sevdaliza might like this track.

Next is nobody from nowhere which has a dark-jazz vibe and takes us on another philosophical journey of nihilism. my bad has a ethno-Western mood which again takes us to another sonic dimension on the record.

Finally, nothing’s gonna change is the last track on the album which is a commentary on optimism and evolution.

Speaking on the production of the record and working with Steve Dub, front-woman Cato Van Dyck says, “Steve’s experience and knowledge of a wide range of styles and his love for cutting edge music immediately felt a great match with what we wanted to achieve with our songs“.

We love the record and have added unlike before to our New Music Spotlight playlist.
