Karl Lagerfeld was the initial inspiration behind the name of KARL IS MY UNKLE, not in an odd fan-boy way but in honour of his creative influence and the fact that he is one of the most legendary tastemakers of our time. In essence, the content of this blog would meet his seal of approval, hence the name.
I’ve met Unkle Karl three times, the first time was during Paris Fashion Week at the Vogue Bar at the Hotel de Crillon about three years ago, the second at the launch of his Diet Coke bottles in Paris and the third, which was by far the most intimate, was when he launched his exclusive collection for she uemura (that day I was at his studio/library at 7L – somewhere that has been significantly photographed and seen by press all over the world).
For the first time now, Karl has let us into his home. Ok, so he took the photos himself and it is not as if anyone was casually browsing his drawers, but still. His apartment is located in the Quai Voltaire in Paris and presented Architectural Digest with a set of photos of every room of his beautiful apartment. He said that he wanted an apartment with glass and transparency everywhere, and no colour as colour is something he is constantly surrounded by and he prefers to live in a neutral environment. This is such a beautiful reason to love monochrome.
