The Weeknd may have sung the words, “I can’t feel my face when I’m with you…” on his subversive hit Can’t Feel My Face, but Erin Porter, also known as Your Best Nightmare – an incredibly intelligent and witty artist that we have been covering recently – is back with I Can’t Feel My Hands. Naturally, we were curious to hear what the track was about and couldn’t wait to share our experience!

Drawing us in with a ringing telephone and a cheeky response of “I don’t know have you tried not worrying about it…”, Your Best Nightmare opens I Can’t Feel My Hands with a dimensional pop-punk energy and the situational prose, “We’re stone cold sober, the room is spinning, adrenaline rising, this is just the beginning…”

The opus expands with Erin’s ingenious songwriting as she invites us into her intricate mind with relatable themes around mental health and survival as an artist and in a society that seems rigged against us.

Erin confesses “[I Can’t Feel My Hands is] a bold, unflinching anthem about the chaos of anxiety and the sting of panic attacks.” The stimulating star continues, “[It] transforms internal spirals into something defiant and electric.”

We appreciate the high octane energy that the song transmutes and the rock-venue friendly soundscape that shows off Erin’s skillset and vocal prowess. It’s super catchy, as with many of her songs, and we find ourselves singing along in unison with the talented creator.

The subversion comes with the bright sonic design juxtaposed with the moody and introspective concept of the song – just another facet that truly makes Erin’s work stand out from a sea of sameness.

With reference to her intention, Your Best Nightmare comments, “I Can’t Feel My Hands continues the powerful evolution in the band’s sound and storytelling. It also arrives as part of their ongoing commitment to destigmatize mental health struggles in the music community and beyond. I Can’t Feel My Hands is not just a song. It’s a lifeline, a lightning bolt, and a rallying cry for anyone who’s ever felt overwhelmed and kept moving anyway. Stream it loud. Feel everything. You’re not alone.”

We have added I Can’t Feel My Hands to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we continue to stream Your Best Nightmare‘s exquisite, growing discography, including St. Agnes, and Joan of Arc.

This year, we fell in love with Your Best Nightmare, and featured her evocative and assertive debut single, Really Cute, as well as her intricate and cerebral sophomore single, Ghost Town Love, so when we heard that the star had released her long awaited self-titled EP in full, we were curious to experience the record and couldn’t wait to share our feedback.

The five track opus opens with Vampire Lover, which draws is into Your Best Nightmare‘s universe with a luscious and dramatic ukulele soundscape, her signature of course, and metaphorical prose filled with philosophical nuance.

We love the high-octane energy of the track, and the naturally self-realized nature of what Your Best Nightmare, also known as artist Erin Porter conveys, telling us how she could eat us up. Needless to say, we have succumbed to her charisma and charm and are ready to be devoured.

The sound design showcases nothing short of instrumental mastery, and we adore Erin’s vocal trills and poetic nature. We can imagine how captivating this would be to experience live. The rising artist has played the Stone Pony in Asbury Park and the Doll Hut in Anaheim! She has worked her way from coast to coast in the continental US and has had a blast along the way.

Next up is Really Cute, which opens with the iconic line “I got dressed up real cute just to watch you argue with the waiter about your f*cking salad…“, and creates space for Erin to deliver her “satirical, feminist bite”.

The record as a whole feels really cohesive, leading us seamlessly onto Eyeliner which opens with an almost 60s adjacent energy demonstrating timelessness in her sound, but of course with a sassy and unique narrative, filled with subversive yet empowering themes and lyrical wordplay.

We love the rawness that you can feel with the star’s delivery, it’s not over processed by any means, setting it apart from her contemporaries, and allowing us to truly connect with the smart and witty soul of the songwriter, at the core of the project.

Paint the Town Red is next, and wildly the same title as Doja Cat‘s recent single, which shows how Erin is truly on the zeitgeist. The record finishes up with Ghost Town Love, which we adore for its escapist narrative as a horror-adjacent story. Speaking on the message of the track and protagonist of the EP, Erin tells us, “The main character has gone as far as she can, and made a ghost town to keep the one she loves alive. It’s an ode to the fantasy of running away with the one you love.”

We loved every minute of the seamless and refined project, we love Erin’s notably intelligent commentary on her own reality and society, and have added Vampire Lover to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream the EP in full and anticipate future releases from the visionary creator.
