Drawing us in with an astral frequency, a dimensional bass performance and textured drums, HMRC open Yankee Candle – Live with an assertive spoken word delivery as they shares the prose, “Well, it’s been six months now and I’m starting to forget, I’ve done myself no good, but the demons, they’re out my head…”

The opus expands with poetic prowess and raw authenticity as HMRC convey “a chilling fictional tale chronicling a jealous ex-boyfriend’s plot to murder his former girlfriend and her new lover.” It’s visceral with cultural motifs, an unhinged energy and a pretty relatable vibe overall!

Fans of The Streets will be able to connect with this, and we could imagine it being featured in a TV show like The Girlfriend on Amazon Prime. The tempo shifts are genius and chaotic, and we love the fact that the track is recorded live. Speaking on why, HMRC say, “The live recording was chosen as it highlights the chaos of the story rather than a watered down studio [version].”

The growls and “woo” sounds add an almost possessed energy before they share, “I still have a key to her house…” which then go on to literally document the murder and the murder weapon – a nearby Yankee Candle. It’s kinda shocking, but also funny as hell.

We learn that songwriter Lloyd Holmes believed “he needed therapy after rereading the lyrics for the first time.” I think we need some therapy too, although the track itself is highly cathartic for anyone who has homicidal feelings about their ex and needs some release.
