Drawing us in with an atmospheric acoustic guitar soundscape with Americana-adjacency, Meaney and the Misfits opens Walk You to the Altar with raw authenticity and the situational lyrics, “Ready or not here I come, she found me hiding by the hiding garden shed, sun-dewed shadows by the old oak tree, it’s where I saw her when I knew we’d be together, so when you’re older, I’ll meet you by the altar…”

We immediately connect with the simplicity and lyrical craftsmanship. There is something beautifully disarming about taking the childhood refrain “ready or not” and turning it into a metaphor for the passage of time. It’s rather genius. What begins as a playful memory gradually becomes something much deeper, as the song moves through childhood, love, parenthood and eventually towards the altar.

The acoustic guitar has a lovely organic quality, and we appreciate the decision to preserve the syncopated imperfections and natural room resonance of the home recording. It kinda feels like we have been invited into a private living room performance. It is intimate, close and wonderfully human at a time when we need it the most.

As for the prose, there is something almost spiritual in the idea that the same places, memories and people can carry different meanings as we move through different chapters of our lives. We could imagine fans of Nick Drake, Glen Hansard, Damien Rice, Ray LaMontagne, Leonard Cohen, and Passenger connecting with the honest storytelling and Americana-adjacent sensibilities of what Meaney and the Misfits has created.

There is definite cinematic potential here too. We could see Walk You to the Altar accompanying the passage-of-time storytelling of About Time, Aftersun, or Boyhood. It could also work beautifully within The Notebook, Once, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, This Is Us, One Day or Normal People.

What makes the song even more affecting is that Pete Meaney isn’t trying to manufacture a profound artistic concept. When asked what influenced the release, his answer is simply, “…just a love for music”. When asked about the story behind it, he says he “wanted to write a song about the passage of time and watching people grow.”

Even his philosophy towards the creative journey feels wonderfully grounded: “Luck is the combination of preparation and opportunity”. We love that quote because it says a lot about the spirit behind the project.

Needless to say, we are charmed by the honesty, simplicity and emotional intelligence of Walk You to the Altar and have added the song to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Meaney and the Misfits, including Hook Line and Sinker, and Two Bullets.
