We previously featured Vela Jones when she took us on a cinematic journey of cosmic disconnection and sonic awakening with her debut single, STATIC AIR, so when we heard that the rising star was back with STAR LIGHT STAR BRIGHT, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.

STAR LIGHT STAR BRIGHT opens with rippling synth arpeggios, percussion clicks, and ethereal ad-libs of the words, “oh oh yeah…”. The opus expands with a dimensional energy and the lyrics, “Star light, star bright, guiding me home to you…”. We immediately realised that this is a continuation of STATIC AIR, and that we are indeed in for a cohesive and well-planned out narrative adventure!

We appreciate the poetic prowess and can imagine Vela Jones in her spaceship on her way back to her destination. Naturally, this can be perceived as a love connection, but also from a wider perspective, her destination could be more metaphorical – a planet, a dimension of peace etc.

Vela Jones is the refreshing cosmic popstar that we needed! We love her psychedelic production, and the hook even reminds us of Madonna’s song Lucky Star. Fans of Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Bat for Lashes, Goldfrapp, and Björk will also be able to connect with Vela’s sound.

As much as we want to mention movies that this song could fit into, there is no doubt that Vela Jones, and her creator, Rick Cassman, are creating a movie unto their own design. The prose is vivid, the visuals are sublime, and we appreciate the adventure. That said, we could also imagine STAR LIGHT STAR BRIGHT in a film like Space Cadet with Emma Roberts, or The Fifth Element.

Speaking on her artistry, the visionary artist says, “As Vela Jones, I create cinematic electronic dream-pop that blends human emotion with futuristic soundscapes. This latest release is inspired by the simple act of wishing on a star, exploring themes of hope, distance, and connection through shimmering synths and atmospheric production.”

Establishing the mood with a rising tanpura frequency and atmospheric ad-libs, expanding with dimensional drums and sitar, Vela Jones opens STATIC AIR with a call for awareness with the words “hello”, before sharing the lyrics, “I’m screaming into empty space, only static answers me, signals lost in distant places, fading out my frequencies…”

We are immediately enthralled by the narrative which is cemented by the music video which sees Vela Jones aboard an orbital station, circling Earth, where a solar flare has destroyed lines of communication.

As for the soundscape, the Indian vibes are perfect for the concept of the astral Gods circling Earth in ancient Vedic philosophies. It also reminds us of Madonna’s Ray of Light era, which is certainly one of her most critically acclaimed and celebrated.

The message of the song is also rather zeitgeist, and as much as this is brought to life cinematically by a sci-fi narrative, the concept resonates on a wider humanitarian and societal level – how we are all disconnected, screaming into the void, when we should really be connecting with oneness, source, and each other.

The instrumentation is sublime, and the solution comes with the realization, “Music notes are they the signal? Could this be my frequency?”. This really invites us to reflect on music as the great unifier, the codes that are truly inside all of us. We love how this also leads to Vela Jones smiling in the visualiser, which comes to a euphoric close with a nod to a continuation.
