Immersing us with a brooding 80s synth, akin to its own Night Rider moment, expanding with astral tones, detailing higher frequencies, Gianfranco Malorgio opens Vanitas with intrigue, dimensionality and epic guitar work that, once again, taps into the high cinematic quotient of this era.

We appreciate the drama that the composition exudes, there is a cohesive sound detailed with guitar work that Santana would be in awe of. The moody vibes bring to life an energy that would be perfect for detective films of the 70s, which was Gianfranco Malorgio‘s intention with the composition.

Although the 70s is cited as an inspiration, the mix itself is progressive and there is also a spacey adjacency, bringing the opus into a futuristic realm that feels zeitgeist. Vanitas showcases Malorgio’s knack for layering, with guitar and synth weaving seamlessly to create tension and release. The composition moves effortlessly, balancing introspective moments with cinematic highs. The production allows every detail to shine, giving the track a timeless, immersive quality. It feels both nostalgic and fresh, proving Malorgio’s skill at blending eras and moods.

Gianfranco Malorgio is a versatile musician and composer whose early classical training under Maestro Giovanni Viola laid the foundation for a rich career in gypsy jazz. In 2005 he created Hot Club Roma, blending traditional gypsy sounds with contemporary projects, including their first album Swing From Rome. He has also contributed to film music, notably recording songs for the award-winning soundtrack of La Casa Sulle Nuvole, and appeared in music videos and festival performances with prominent artists such as Dario Pinelli and Angelo Debarre.

Throughout his career, Malorgio has collaborated with international jazz talents, performing with Dorado Schmitt in Rome and joining forces with actor Giorgio Tirabassi for tours in Italy and London. His work continues to expand across Europe, including concerts with Noè Reinhardt at the Cotton Club in Rome and recording in Paris for Moreno Viglione’s album Paris Gipsy Guitars, highlighting his ongoing influence in the gypsy jazz scene.

We have added Vanitas to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Gianfranco Malorgio discography, including the recently reviewed, Aimlessly!
