Establishing the mood with the sound of a whirring tape player, expanding with an intricate and cinematic guitar performance and astral synth lines, Kavé opens Unravel with intrigue and cinematic allure.

The opus evolves into a shimmering and somewhat psychedelic soundscape with a high emotional quotient. We appreciate the emergence of subtle crowd noises before a unique guitar melody with spiritual percussion notions.

The string arrangement is transcendental. We could imagine the track being featured in a TV show like the trippy and subversive Nine Perfect Strangers, or on the playlist poolside on the rooftop of Petit Ermitage in West Hollywood, where psychedelic songs of this nature often find their home. The cohesive ebbs and flows are hypnotic and the mastery of the guitar has us in awe.

As for the concept of the track, we learn that Kavé is the solo audiovisual project of London-based musician, producer and visual storyteller Alex Kos. The project is designed to explore themes of memory, distance and longing.

It is all set in the year 2325, and follows protagonist Kavé, who is stranded on the failed colony of Perpetua and sending mixtape transmissions back to Earth, imagining an alternative to a technologically saturated dystopia. We could imagine the composition being featured in a Sofia Coppola film, and fans of Air would be able to vibe with what Kavé is creating.

Music Video: Laura Welsh – Unravel

Last month, we heard Unravel by Laura Welsh what has fast become one of my favourite tracks of 2013. The track was produced by Dev Hynes, so the higher powers are clearly investing in Welsh, and there is no doubt that big things are destined for the mysterious new indie-pop artist.

The black and white video for the track just debuted. It doesn’t feature Laura and it is technically an adaptation of New Year’s Eve – a short film Eddie O’Keefe starring Cristina Fernandez and Kevin Bigley. The edit is by Baby Sweet Sessions.
