The original film became a huge global success for Netflix, earning more than 102 million views and becoming one of the platform’s most successful non-English language films. Its ending, which left Paris flooded and full of mutated sharks, made a sequel feel almost inevitable. 

One of the biggest changes for the sequel is behind the camera. While the first film was directed by Xavier Gens, Under Paris 2 will now be helmed by Alexandre Aja, known for shark and creature features like Piranha 3D and Crawl. Gens remains involved as co-writer and associate producer, helping maintain continuity with the first story. 

The story jumps forward three years after the “Paris triathlon disaster.” According to the official synopsis, the center of Paris is now submerged after failed attempts to destroy the sharks caused widespread flooding. Marine scientist Sophia and police commander Adil reunite for a dangerous mission to track Lilith, the original shark, in the Seine. However, they soon discover that the deadly wildlife hides an even bigger mystery. 

Returning cast members include Bérénice Bejo as Sophia and Nassim Lyes as Adil. Other names attached include Guillaume Gouix, Philippe Bas, Manon Bresch, and Anne Marivin. The screenplay is being written by a team that includes Aja, Xavier Gens, and several collaborators, suggesting the sequel aims to expand the original world rather than simply repeat it. 

Fan reactions online have been mixed but excited. Some Reddit viewers called the first movie “so fun” and praised its wild disaster-movie energy, while others felt the sequel could improve by delivering even bigger chaos and more memorable shark action. Many believe Aja’s experience with horror spectacle could make the second film stronger than the first.
