We just featured Sergiy Bolotny for confronting the devastation of war through haunting violin textures and Ukrainian folk heritage on his intentional new composition, Reflections: Oh, Human Destiny, so naturally, we wanted to dig through the visionary composer and artist’s archive and spotlight his single, Ukrainian Caprice No.4 Sycamore & Burlesque.

The opus opens with a high emotional quotient and Sergiy’s signature, cinematic allure. We are immediately enthralled by the melancholia that manifests and the power that this singular instrument holds. A combination of raw authenticity and intentional depth comes to life as we are taken on an introspective journey.

Ukrainian Caprice No.4 Sycamore & Burlesque evolves with subtle tempo shifts, the accelerando is sublime and truly evokes a deep emotional resonance before reaching an astral climax with a heart-wrenching culmination. The composition switches energy mid-way through into a more fantastical and whimsical approach, which feels brighter and more resolute. We are reminded of the optimism and resilience that can emerge after periods of sorrow.

The shift from lamentation into a spirited celebration of life feels important and zeitgeist, delivered as catharsis, during a time, globally, that we need to experience this the most. We are invited to trust the journey, and trust the universe. The expressive vibrato adds warmth and is also deeply rooted in Slavic music tradition. The violin’s upper register lends the melody an otherworldly energy, and there is no doubt an expression of emotional movement inviting us into a dance.

This transition into Burlesque features rapid spiccato passages, string crossings and rhythmic accents which all reveal Bolotny’s virtuosic command of the violin. We love the precision and learn that it was inspired by the poetry of Taras Shevchenko, particularly Teche voda z-pid yavora (Water Flows from Under the Sycamore).

A Ukrainian-born concert violinist and composer based in the Netherlands, Bolotny serves as Assistant Second Concertmaster with the Noord Nederlands Orkest. His musical education in Lviv, Kyiv and Vienna informs a distinctive artistic perspective that bridges classical tradition, folk heritage and contemporary composition. Fans of Max Richter, Niccolò Paganini, Hilary Hahn, Eugène Ysaÿe and Ólafur Arnalds will appreciate the combination of technical sophistication, expressive depth and adventurous musical storytelling.

Cinematically, we can imagine Ukrainian Caprice No. 4 Sycamore & Burlesque featuring in a Luca Guadagnino or Sofia Coppola film, or perhaps a movie such as The Painted Bird, The Pianist, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Secret of Kells, The Banshees of Inisherin and The Fabelmans. On television, it would work well in The Queen’s Gambit, Chernobyl, The Crown, The Empress and The New Look.

Of course, we have added Ukrainian Caprice No. 4 Sycamore & Burlesque to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the exquisite and cohesive, growing discography of Sergiy Bolotny.
