We previously featured Neil Valmonte for delivering an anthemic reflection on life’s journey with his cinematic and healing debut single, Down on the River, so when we heard that Neil was back with The Road I Didn’t Plan On, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.

The Road I Didn’t Plan On opens with a glitched guitar slide and acoustic performance with an emotive fiddle accompaniment as Neil shares the situational lyrics, “I was 23 and restless, thought I knew just where to go, had a map inside my pocket and a pace that felt too slow, and the job I thought I wanted fell apart in just one day and the road I didn’t plan on became the one that paved the way…”

We immediately connect with Neil’s philosophical brand of songwriting and the emotional depth that manifests. As for the message of the song, it is clearly rooted in the realisation that life’s detours can lead us towards the most fulfilling and universally destined version of ourselves.

We have all experienced moments when plans fall apart, yet with hindsight, those moments can become turning points that lead us towards something more meaningful. It’s about trusting the universe and we love how Neil explores this experience without forcing a simplistic narrative of triumph, instead embracing the uncertainty.

There is a cinematic quality to the track, perfect for a movie with similar themes like Forrest Gump, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Good Will Hunting, About Time, The Pursuit of Happyness and Wild. On television, we could imagine the song in This Is Us, Ted Lasso, One Tree Hill, Parenthood or Northern Exposure.

Commenting on the release, Neil confesses, “The song speaks for itself – it’s a song about reflecting on the surprises that life gives you and the unexpected gifts that we are given. Everyone faces trials and hardships and sometimes we believe when things feel like they’re moving in the wrong direction – or at least away from our plans – that things must be bad. In reality, we don’t know whether an experience is good or bad as we don’t know what the next turn in the road brings. Ultimately, we are shaped by all of our experiences and sometimes the road you don’t plan on becomes your story.”

He adds, “This release is significant because it continues the introspective examination of one person’s life. If Down oy the River is a song of resilience, The Road I Didn’t Plan On could be a song of surprised acceptance and appreciation of what it took to create the person the singer is today.”

Based in Westport, Connecticut, Neil is a solo songwriter, musician and producer who creates his music independently from his basement studio. Whilst his creative process incorporates AI-assisted production, the heart of the project remains rooted in his own experiences.
