The Pulltops’ vibrant reinterpretation of the traditional Christmas carol I Saw Three Ships is a sonic explosion of energy and joy, seamlessly blending the timeless spirit of the original with the duo’s modern pop-punk aesthetic. Milwaukee-based musicians Mark Pierret and Tom Crowell breathe new life into this holiday classic, crafting a version that feels equally at home in a festive movie montage, a high-energy TV show scene, or the climactic moment of a Christmas party playlist.

On Christmas Day (I Saw Three Ships) opens with punchy guitars and a driving rhythm that immediately grabs our attention. Crowell’s intricate riffs set the stage for Pierret’s commanding drumbeats, creating a soundscape that feels urgent yet celebratory. The lyrics, steeped in traditional imagery of three ships sailing into harbor on Christmas morning, retain their joyful charm. Still, the addition of anthemic “Oh oh oh” refrains and spirited vocals makes the track feel like a rallying cry for the season. The balance of reverence and rebellion makes it a versatile piece – perfect for soundtracking scenes of characters finding unexpected joy, rushing home for the holidays, or even a lively holiday concert sequence.

The Pulltops’ eclectic musical influences shine through in this rendition. Pierret’s grounding in soulful, earthy tones meets Crowell’s flair for experimental and underground sounds, resulting in a track that straddles tradition and modernity. While the song stays faithful to its carol roots, the raw energy and layered instrumentation make it fresh and accessible for contemporary audiences. The soaring melodies and driving beats create an atmosphere of relentless festivity, making it easy to imagine the song underscoring a feel-good family movie or a Netflix Christmas special where characters triumphantly rediscover the magic of the season.

What truly sets this version apart is its ability to evoke joy without feeling overly polished or commercial. There’s an authenticity to the performance that makes it perfect for moments of collective celebration, whether that’s a pivotal scene in a romantic comedy, a coming-of-age drama, or even a spirited holiday commercial. Its energy feels contagious, the kind of music you’d want blaring in the background of a snowball fight, a spontaneous dance party, or a scene where characters rally together to save Christmas.

Beyond its cinematic and television potential, On Christmas Day (I Saw Three Ships) is tailor-made for those holiday moments where energy and connection are paramount. It’s the track you want on a playlist to kickstart the mood of a festive gathering or to amplify the adrenaline of wrapping last-minute gifts with friends. It’s a reminder that while Christmas is rooted in tradition, it’s also about finding new ways to express joy and bring people together.

The Pulltops have crafted more than just a cover; they’ve reimagined a holiday classic in a way that feels vibrant, inclusive, and undeniably fun. Whether it’s in a movie montage, a TV holiday special, or your personal Christmas playlist, this track is sure to bring a dose of energy and festive cheer wherever it plays. We have added the opus to our New Music Spotlight playlist, as well as our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of The Pulltops!

Red Eye Open Sky by The Pulltops is a captivating opus that drifts through the expanse of late-night longing, merging timeless alternative rock with a poignantly cinematic aura. This Milwaukee-based duo, Mark Pierret on drums and Tom Crowell on guitar, channel their deep and diverse record collections into a song that feels like a spiritual journey, equal parts meditation and rock anthem. The track mirrors the relentless push and pull of the road, where each mile whispers promises of reunion while pulling you farther from the familiar.

The lyrics paint an evocative picture of solitude and introspection, with the protagonist as a “lonely satellite” roaming a vast, open sky. This metaphor is hauntingly apt; it captures a feeling of existential isolation, an individual orbiting within the vast emptiness, yet inexorably drawn by gravitational forces back to something, someone, that gives meaning to the journey. “Driving thru the night / I’m like a lonely satellite / Without you by my side”, captures the familiar ache of distance in relationships. Here, love is both a destination and a departure point; the heart is suspended in a state of absence and anticipation.

The progression of time is another theme woven deftly through the lyrics. Lines like, “Years fly by like a runaway car / Faster than the speed of time” evoke the unstoppable forward motion that we all experience, reminding us of time’s ceaseless flow and how easily it can slip away. This feeling is universal, yet deeply personal, suggesting a life spent moving, yearning, and striving, punctuated by moments of clarity that make the entire journey worthwhile.

Musically, The Pulltops have crafted a piece that brings a cinematic intensity to the familiar sounds of indie rock, power pop, and alternative rock. The driving rhythm and guitar work carry an echo of classic rock anthems while still feeling fresh and immediate. Mark and Tom’s background in pop sensibilities ensures that each hook lands with precision, elevating the song from a simple road anthem to something more introspective. The bridge builds with a palpable urgency, each beat pulling the listener closer to that promised reunion, a sonic manifestation of the longing in the lyrics.

The chorus, “Red eye open sky / Driving thru the night”, is more than just a catchy line. It’s a statement on human perseverance and the ceaseless drive to reconnect. There’s an inherent hope here, as if even in the darkest hours of solitude, there is a light ahead, a promise of home. The line “I can make it home by daylight” acts as both a literal goal and a metaphor for finding peace, love, and perhaps even self-acceptance.

The Pulltops have managed to blend their varied influences into something that feels timeless yet unique, a reflection of their creative partnership. Despite their diverse tastes, Mark’s affinity for country and soul, Tom’s for the experimental, they converge in their love of strong hooks and meaningful melodies. Red Eye Open Sky exemplifies their chemistry, balancing edge and introspection, grit and grace.

In the end, Red Eye Open Sky resonates as a story of longing, growth, and the beauty of reconnection. It captures that paradoxical feeling of being both lost and on the cusp of arrival, with each town that fades in the rearview carrying both loss and gain. This is a song for anyone who’s been on a journey, not just across miles, but across the landscapes of memory, love, and self-discovery. We have added the song to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of The Pulltops, and anticipate future releases!

Drawing us in with a dimensional bassline, astral synth riffs and a pulsating, overarching mood, The Pulltops open Waiting Here with their cohesive nature and atmospheric vocals with the situational prose, “Don’t want to talk about it, it’s too hard to explain, how I feel about it, since you’ve gone away…”

The opus expands with an immersive vocal bridge, before we experience the fierce, assertive and self-realized hook. We are transported into a synth-wave universe and we love the poetic depth, iconic ad libs, and existential nuance with elements of timeless dark-wave that taps into a transcendental vibe. Perfect for listening on headphones or in the car, the production itself is super dynamic so it really makes us want to hear every detail. We are particularly enthralled by the instrumental breakdown, building drama and anticipation with a captivating reprise for an anthemic finale.

Waiting Here is an emotionally resonant and relatable track that encapsulates the profound feelings of longing and introspection. The song’s poignant lyrics reflect the universal experience of waiting for something elusive, bringing to life a deep well of emotions that most of us can easily connect with.

The anticipation and uncertainty conveyed through the words evoke a sense of vulnerability and hope, creating a powerful emotional connection. As the lyrics unfold, they paint a vivid picture of the internal struggle between desire and patience, making us feel as though they are part of a shared human journey.

The melody of Waiting Here enhances its emotional impact, blending the raw energy of alternative rock with the smooth undertones of synth bass. This combination creates a soundscape that is both dynamic and introspective, perfectly mirroring the song’s thematic content. The driving rhythm and haunting harmonies draw us into a reflective state, where we can explore our own feelings of longing and anticipation.

It becomes an experience that speaks to the human condition. The track’s exploration of waiting for something just out of reach resonates with anyone who has felt the pangs of unfulfilled desire or the bittersweet hope of a distant dream.

We always love the high quality nature of what The Pulltops offer, and the emotional depth of Mark and Tom, who are clearly highly talented beings with souls to share. We have added Waiting Here to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our brand new TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream The Pulltops‘ wider discography including Here We Are, and Wide Awake, and anticipate future releases from the duo.

Our obsession with The Pulltops seems to grow with every listen, so when we heard that the band was back with a brand new release, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our every thought.

With You opens with an 80s adjacent psychedelic nature before expanding into a luscious and dimensional synthscape with a stunning vocal design and evocative lyricism.

We are captivated by the soundscape and the guitar riffs; dramatic risers and anthemic drums fill out the composition whilst we are taken on a ride through time and space, but essentially bringing us back to the concept of love.

The vocal performances are incredible, and fans of bands like Journey will absolutely be able to connect with the effort from the Milwaukee based duo.

Drummer Mark Pierret and guitarist Tom Crowell certainly know how to create a visionary composition, and With You is no exception. We love the release, and have added With You to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream The Pulltops‘s growing discography and anticipate future releases from the stars.
