Last year, we featured a slew of releases from the visionary and intentional Ken Woods and The Old Blue Gang, so naturally, we were extremely curious and excited to experience their first release of 2026, titled: Oh Denise.

The track opens with a cerebral and syncopated energy tapping into a divergent rock’n’roll meets blues vibe. Ken’s gruff vocals exude subversion as he takes us on another poetic journey, but this time with the human experience in mind.

In essence, Oh Denise is about desire, restlessness and the pull of a seductive woman. It is not a complicated tale, but the track feels high octane and almost liquored up! The image of the bar in the artwork also cements this creative choice.

It is a fast and cheeky blues tune that leans into notions of flirtation and bravado. It is also laced with the kind of romantic trouble, per se, that has fuelled this genre of song since the history of time. Sonically, it is rooted in Texas blues and swing, but also has a cinematic allure – definitely movie or TV soundtrack ready – we could imagine it in an episode of Westworld, the new Interview with the Vampire series, or True Blood.

A steady shuffle groove from Joe Hoskin and Steve Roberts makes the track super danceable, and lyrically, it is nice to hear something lighter hearted from Ken Woods following his more serious releases from the Silent Spike album era.

Woods is certainly a master of his craft, as he pulls from blues, rock, country and jazz. His art is shaped by years of study and listening, and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s influence is clear, but Ken is truly his own man! A talented one at that.

We have added Oh Denise to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the growing discography of Ken Woods and The Old Blue Gang, and anticipate future release this year!

Drawing us in with an immersive, almost thunderous energy with astral guitar arpeggios and a dramatic allure, Ken Woods and The Old Blue Gang open Lily White with intrigue and a cinematic nature as they share a brooding timbre with another captivating tale with an important message.

“Folks here tell stories about the old Lily White, about how the mine’s owner paid in dynamite, he said he blew up the mineshaft so his miners were trapped…” sings Ken as he brings to life this traumatic historical event.

Ken Woods and The Old Blue Gang explores this tale, and whether it is a myth, legend or the truth. The prose is descriptive, melancholic, vivid and brings to life the trauma that the miners may have suffered… “It’s blacker than midnight in the Lily White mine, when you’re buried alive and nobody cares…”.

The composition takes a sonic shift into an intricate acoustic solo accompanied by soft drums, inviting us to reflect on the sad story that we have just heard. The prose returns with the hook of the song, embedded into our minds. A trauma created by greed.

Legend has it that between 1886 and 1889, up to 100 Chinese miners were trapped inside the Lily White Gold Mine, located in Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains, either by accident or on purpose.

People believe that the ghosts of the victims sing and dance above the mine on moonlit nights. Though no bodies have ever been found, the mystery continues to haunt the area, raising unanswered questions.

Naturally, we are in awe once again of Ken Woods and The Old Blue Gang‘s historical and educational approach to song creation, and their pursuit of the truth – teaching us all about tales forgotten, and reminding us that there is still so much work to be done to manifests peace and equality on planet Earth.

We have added Lily White to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Ken Woods and The Old Blue Gang, including Sundown Town, and Ride the Rails!

We recently featured Ken Woods and The Old Blue Gang as they channelled their art as activism with their important and historically adept debut opus, Ride the Rails, so when we found out that Ken and the band were back with Sundown Town, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.

Establishing the mood with another dimensional rock soundscape with rolling, textured drums and a dark Americana adjacency, Ken Woods opens Sundown Town with prophetic prose and the intentional depth with cinematic allure that we have come to love from this project.

Perfect for a massive Western synch deal, and full of poetic prowess and vivid imagery, Ken Woods and The Old Blue Gang reimagine another historical moment with their unique brand of storytelling. The guitar solos are sublime, astral and almost akin to fireworks exploding at sunset – we are enthralled.

Sundown Town tackles the dark, often suppressed history of racial exclusion in America – specifically the phenomenon of “sundown towns.” These were towns that either openly or covertly barred African Americans (and sometimes other minorities) from remaining within their borders after sunset, oftentimes through signs, intimidation, and violence. The track serves as a powerful musical warning and call to accountability, confronting this uncomfortable legacy head-on.

Blending classic rock influences like The Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd with rich guitars and organ, the song forms another part of the upcoming concept album Silent Spike, which tells the story of Chinese railroad workers in the American West. The band’s moniker reclaims “Old Blue Gang” from a racist past to challenge hate and honour diverse musical traditions.

Naturally, we have added Sundown Town to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the Ride the Rails, and anticipate the remainder of the groundbreaking and activism-driven project!

Drawing us in with the sound of a passing train, expanding with an alternative Americana energy, Ken Woods and The Old Blue Gang open Ride the Rails with situational prose, poetic prowess and a captivating narrative with a cinematic allure.

The opus evolves with a high octane vibe, akin to a rolling train, which feels apt, masterfully created and Ken’s timbre is charismatic, laced with intellectually stimulating message as he shares his wisdom and a historical happening through the tale.

We learn that through the metaphorical prose, the creators are actually bringing to life the events of September 24th 1893, when a gang of residents and KKK members led the forcible expulsion of the entire Chinese community in La Grande, Oregon. We deeply appreciate how Ken and his cohorts are bringing to life their art as activism to raise awareness on the brutalities of history past.

Ride the Rails features somewhat epic guitar performances, straight out of the Wild West, and ready for a synch deal fitting for an upcoming Westworld sequel. The double guitar finale of the track is literally out of this world, full of drama, and in line with the concept of the track which closes with the train once again, bringing us full circle, which is perhaps a zeitgeist commentary on the re-emergence of political and cultural turmoil today.

Ride the Rails serves as a cut from the creators’ forthcoming concept album Silent Spike. The album is designed to recount the story of the Chinese workers who built the Transcontinental Railways in the American West and the hardships they faced, including migration, violence and exclusion, ending with a peaceful tribute to their legacy. Musically, it is set to be a fusion of American roots styles like blues, rock, and folk with improvisation, reclaiming cowboy and western culture through a name that challenges historical injustice.

Naturally, we have added Ride the Rails to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Sundown Town, and anticipate the release of Silent Spike!
