Establishing the mood with ethereal vocalizations and a dramatic synthscape, expanding with a choral moment and anthemic rippling drums, Neural Pantheon opens The Merchant’s Last Coin with the conceptual lyrics, “Golden scales and silver tongue, every deal precisely hung, mammon whispers in my ear, what’s a memory worth, my dear…”

In essence, The Merchant’s Last Coin unfolds as a cautionary tale about a merchant who keeps getting richer by trading away his own memories in a deal with Mammon, the demon of greed. It’s high concept and interestingly zeitgeist, despite the old world references.

At first, the deals seem worth it, and he gives up his mother’s lullaby, his first kiss, even the taste of summer rain. In return he gets gold, ships and cash. The voice of greed keeps whispering that memories have a price, and the merchant convinces himself that wealth is more reliable than feelings. How very capitalistic of him.

With every transaction he grows richer, but also more detached and eventually realises the cost. He is alone, has sold his soul and identity whilst his spirit echoes in an empty hall. He is hollow and unable to recall his life or who he loved. The final message serves as the moral to the story, “What profits a man to gain it all, if he forgets who he was before the fall…”

We learn that Neural Pantheon is a magnificent storyteller who is drawn to the darker corners where folklore brushes up against modern anxiety. The artist is inspired by old folk ballads and the moral pull of ancient parables, he writes songs that feel timeless but still hit close to home.

The Merchant’s Last Coin is featured on Neural Pantheon‘s album, The Nameless Hour. Needless to say, we are in awe, and could imagine the song being featured in an episode of Game of Thrones or Interview with the Vampire. We have added The Merchant’s Last Coin to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the entirety of The Nameless Hour!
