Our obsession with The Marsh Family seems to grow with every listen! Last year, we featured the talented unit as they created a space of support and togetherness with the vibrant and charming single, The Bubble Song, so naturally, we were keen to explore their latest offering, a cover of Keeping the Dream Alive, originally by Münchener Freiheit in 1988!

For some context, the lyrics of the song reflect on memories that resurface during a rainy night. Through the prose, the rain brings back faces, places and emotions from the past. The family shares how they feel notions of both nostalgia and longing. Even though the hopes once shared were unrealistic, they still mattered, and the memories keep the connection alive. This message actually feels very zeitgeist, and we can understand why The Marsh Family decided to release this cover.

Keeping the Dream Alive is also a song about perseverance. The concept of the “game” is life, love, and a shared dream. Even when things might end or fall apart, the dream continues as long as we hold onto it. We learn that patience is a virtue, and “keeping the dream alive” gives meaning and hope to our shared existence.

As for the soundscape, we are enamoured by the layered power-pop vocal harmonies, luscious and awe inspiring. The delicate performances of the verses with intricate guitar accompaniment are sublime and the orchestral nuances add a whimsical edge to the composition.

It almost feels like this would be a perfect addition to the Wicked movie franchise. There is an escapist sentiment, and theatrical nuance that comes to life. We learn that Keeping the Dream Alive is also a charity single. The track raises money for Tiny Toes, a neonatal charity in East Kent.

Immersing us in a quirky, soul-rock meets funk soundscape, The Marsh Family open their latest single, Biological Clock with a profound theme that is rarely covered in popular music today, menopause.

With a pseudo-psychdelic vibe, the band takes us through the symptoms of menopause , leading us to the hook as they sing, “she blows hot and cold, it’s like nobody knows, but there’s a lot inside she’s got going on..”

Touching on themes of sleep deprivation, mood swings and temperature changes, it feels important that the Marsh Family are making this statement and delivering activism and awareness on the subject through the medium of art.

Speaking on their creation, The Marsh Family say, “The song tells a story of onrushing symptoms and challenges, describing a rollercoaster of emotions, but finishes on a strident and positive note as layers of harmony, rich horns, and a thumping bass close out the track. It’s a message about health, unity and understanding.”

Mother and vocalist, Danielle insisted when writing Biological Clock, “The song needed to be positive and powerful as well as funny, because women are often scared and surprised by the changes we all face, so it was important to find the right balance.”

The Marsh Family is a family group from the UK who, unsurprisingly, went viral with pandemic parody videos several times during lockdowns, amassing 115,000 followers on YouTube and many media appearances.

Dubbed the “Von Trapped” family by the New York Times, they raised millions of spirits and smiles during lockdown, appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live (2020), the BBC’s Comic Relief show (2021), and spearheading a Christmas campaign for Prostate Cancer UK in December 2021, with their video ‘Mack The Knife (Prostate Cancer – Facts of Life)’ shortlisted for the Brand Film Awards in 2022. During the pandemic they raised funds for Save the Children and the W.H.O.’s COVID-19 Fund.

The Marsh Family have appeared on UK programmes This Morning, BBC Breakfast, GMB, BBC Morning Live, and featured in OK! Magazine and international broadcasts including Democracy Now and The Project. Their biggest viral hits have included ‘One Day More’ (which clocked up 11 million views on Facebook alone in March 2020) and ‘Have the New Jab’ (in support of the vaccination campaign) and ‘Totally Fixed Where We Are’, with their YouTube channel logging over 15 million views and counting. 

The family consists of parents Ben (the lyricist, a history lecturer, 45) and Danielle Marsh (administrator, 44) and their children Alfie (15), Thomas (14), Ella (12) and Tess (10), who all play the instruments on their tracks.

The wholesome value that The Marsh Family are sharing with the world is much needed, and we are grateful that they are raising such an important topic.
